Sunday School

Your children, grandchildren, and their friends up to the age of twenty are welcome to attend the Christian Science Sunday School, held at 10:00 a.m. at First Church of Christ, Scientist, Alton-Godfrey. In small classes, pupils learn to recognize God’s love for them and how the spiritual and moral teachings in the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy can help them in their daily lives.

Sunday School includes singing hymns with musical accompaniment, Responsive Reading from the weekly Bible Lesson, brief silent prayer, followed by praying together the Lord’s prayer. The rest of the hour is spent in classes with students their own age. The teachers bring an enthusiastic spiritual understanding of the Bible, and a wealth of their own life experience to the teaching process to make the classes lively and purposeful for each age level.

First lessons cover the Lord’s Prayer, the Ten Commandments, as well as the Beatitudes from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. Pupils are taught the practical application of the Bible to everyday living. The older classes consist of discussions based on the students’ questions and on the weekly Bible Lesson- Sermon. Students concerned about identity, relationships, peer pressure, and the future find practical answers to these universal questions about life. Their study and class discussions give them the tools they need to meet the many challenges faced by young people today.
